Open in Google Docs →These are the rules every recon element follows. They come up in assessments, and more importantly they keep your element alive in the field.
Never get pinned. If you cannot win a firefight quickly, break contact and move. Your value is staying mobile and continuing to collect, not holding ground.
A late report is nearly as bad as no report. Get the transmission out fast and get every element of it right — command acts on what you say.
Recon does not stop when the main force moves. You are the eyes before, during, and after. If your OP goes quiet, command is blind.
When you find something, confirm it fast. How many, where, doing what. The sooner those are answered, the sooner command can act.
You have no value sitting at base. If you are not collecting, you are not contributing.
Do not chase secondary targets. Your job is answering the commander's specific questions — the PIRs. Stay on them.
Once you find the enemy, do not lose them. Track movement, update reports, keep eyes on until relieved or ordered to withdraw.
You cannot gather intelligence if your element has been compromised. Notice how heavily these overlap with the recon fundamentals — that is deliberate. Security and reconnaissance are the same continuous activity.
Maintain enemy contact — keep tracking the threat so it cannot surprise you
Orient on the force, area, or facility being protected — know what you are covering
Provide early and accurate warning — report threats before they become crises
Provide reaction time and maneuver space — give your element room to respond
Perform continuous reconnaissance — security and recon are the same activity
Reading terrain off a map is a skill you can drill on your own. Work through Study mode first, then test yourself in Quiz mode.

Instructor reference material for running selection, the training pipeline, and in-game showcases. Everything here is staff-facing — check the handling rules before sharing anything with trainees.
Share block objectives and drill descriptions with trainees. Do not share rubric scores or instructor notes — the goal is to develop operators, not coach them to game the rubric.
Treat all candidate scores as confidential until the AAR phase. Selection results are briefed by cadre, not passed around informally.
Run each showcase demonstration yourself before asking students to attempt the drill independently. Students should never see a standard for the first time while being graded against it.
